Tone, Musicianship, and Virtuosity for the Flute
A flute seminar by Bernard Goldberg assisted by Dr. Laurie Glencross with Mary Kay Fink, (Guest Piccolo Instructor), Cesar Reyes (piano)
August 1- August 6, 2011
Lake Piedmont Inn
One hour west of the Pittsburgh International Airport
Piedmont, Ohio 43983
About the Seminar:
Tone, Musicianship, and Virtuosity for the Flute offers students a
concentrated program encompassing all aspects of the baroque,
classical, 19th century, and contemporary flute repertoire.
Mornings begin with a refreshing class in Tai chi and breath control exercises followed
by the morning master class session dedicated to the etude and concert repertoire.
Successful applicants are invited to prepare some specific etudes, concert pieces and
orchestral excerpts to enable the class to study in depth certain playing problems in
articulation, tone production, and musical phrasing. Afternoon and evening classes cover
the orchestral and flute quartet repertoire and text and recordings of Moyse’s “Tone
Development Through Interpretation”. Coaching in Music theory and analysis will be
provided by Dr. Glencross upon request.
Bernard Z. Goldberg
Bernard Z. Goldberg, retired Principal Flutist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, has
had a long and distinguished career as one of the world’s leading flutists and flute
pedagogues of the French school of flute playing.
Mr. Goldberg began his study of the flute with John Kiburz (a pupil of Georges Barrere)
and Laurent Torno (a pupil of Georges Laurent, principal flute of the Boston Symphony
Orchestra, who in turn studied with Paul Taffanel) and made his debut with the St. Louis
Symphony at the age of 16. Mr. Goldberg became a scholarship student at the Juilliard
School of Music with Georges Barrere (a student of Altes and Taffanel), who
transformed the flute and playing by introducing the French school of flute playing to
America.
While still a student at Juilliard, Mr. Goldberg was chosen by Eric Leinsdorf to join the
Cleveland Orchestra and became its Principal Flutist two years later. He was
subsequently appointed Principal Flutist with the Pittsburgh Symphony in 1947 by the
legendary Fritz Reiner and played under the world’s leading conductors until his
retirement in 1993 (Paul Paray, Victor Desabata, Leopold Stowkowski, Eugene
Ormandy, William Steinberg, Andre Previn, Loren Maazel, and many others).
Demonstrating his commitment to excellence both as a flutist and musician, he furthered
his knowledge by summer studies in France with Lucien Lavaillotte (a student of
Philippe Gaubert and Marcel Moyse and principal flute of the Paris Opera) and then with
Marcel Moyse at Marlboro, VT and St. Amour, France from 1955 until Mr. Moyse’s
death in 1984. In fact Marcel Moyse stated that Mr. Goldberg was “without a doubt my
successor” (Le Depart, Aug. 24, 1982). Mr. Goldberg studied pedagogic analysis,
especially interpretation of Bach, with Diran Alexanian, one of his generation’s great
musical pedagogues, and private coaching with Pablo Casals.
Mr. Goldberg has been featured as soloist with the PSO, the Casals Festivals in Prades
and San Juan, Marlboro Festival, Edinburgh Festival, and the Mostly Mozart Festival,
where he was also Principal Flute. A champion of contemporary composers, Mr.
Goldberg has premiered many works by leading composers (Frank Martin, Virgil
Thompson, John Williams, Leonard Bernstein, Ned Rorem, Lennox Berkeley, and
Wilfrid Mellers among many others). Mr. Goldberg has recorded as soloist with the
Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, Czech National Radio Orchestra, Music from Marlboro,
and has recorded for Vox, Cook Records, and MCCI; with Musica Viva Trio and the
Audubon Quarter; and with the Pittsburgh Symphony on Columbia Records, Command
Classics, and Marlborough Records.
Mr. Goldberg maintains an active private teaching and master class schedule and is
currently a member of the faculty of the Brooklyn College Conservatory.

with whom she recorded the duo Recombinant Landscapes for the disc Venturi Shadows.

Orchestra, the Madison Symphony and the New York Philharmonic. In addition to The
Cleveland Orchestra, she has soloed with the Milwaukee Symphony (youth soloist);

and New Jersey Symphonies. In addition to her orchestral work, she performs in solo and
chamber music recitals throughout the Cleveland area, often with her husband, pianist
and composer Nicolas Underhill. She is a member of the Cleveland Chamber Collective,
which commissions some of the work it performs. The ensemble recorded a CD, The
