Rhian Kenny:

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Principal Piccolo, was born in Benghazi, Libya. She grew up in Calgary, Alberta, Canada where she began her study of the flute at the age of nine. Before entering university she studied with Phillipa Fullerton, Principal Flutist of the Calgary Philharmonic and Martha Durkin, currently 2nd Flutist of the Winnipeg Symphony among others. She received her Bachelor’s Degree of Music from McGill University, Montreal, Quebec where she studied with Timothy Hutchins, Principal Flutist of the Montreal Symphony.

Throughout her studies she won many competitions including the Concours de L’Orchestre Symphonique de Trois-Rivieres (1989), Concours de L’Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal (1988) and the Concours de L’Orchestre Symphonique de Quebec (1987).

Ms. Kenny joined the Pittsburgh Symphony at the beginning of the 1990-91 season as Principal Piccolo. She is active in the orchestra’s education and outreach programs, speaking often to groups throughout the Pittsburgh region. She teaches both privately and at Duquesne University.
